Wilderness Experience Tour

Just a 30 minute drive from downtown Auckland lies the beautiful Waitakere Ranges, Auckland's largest Regional park. These ranges separate Auckland from its rugged West Coast and in them is Auckland's coastal rainforest. On this half day small group tour, you will visit the Arataki Visitor Centre, where there are stunning views of the whole of the Auckland isthmus with the Pacific Ocean to the East and the Tasman Sea to the West and their two very different harbours, the calm, sparkling Waitemata and the brooding Manukau. With the help of your guide, absorb the area's history and admire the magnificent traditional Maori carvings that stand guard there.

Continue on to Karekare Falls. This picturesque cascading waterfall is the location for many weddings. Relax beside it or swim in the pool beneath it. Then walk through the glade of gnarled, centuries-old pohutukawa trees to the black (iron) sand beach. The Karekare beach was also the location for the award winning movie 'The Piano'. While here, enjoy an informative explanation about the local history, flora and fauna from your local guide.

Your journey will then take you for a walk in the lush Waitakere rainforest. Because New Zealand has existed for millions of years separate from the rest of the world it has evolved its own unique flora and fauna. Seventy percent of our native plants are found nowhere else in the world. The guides will explain about the native species as you walk amongst New Zealand's famous kauri trees and giant tree ferns and hear native birds.

For the first time ever, step onto a dynamic bridge which has grown up with New Zealanders. Stylishly converted paths make for an easier trip, with ladder-like walkways and kindly curving arches adding to the thrill of being 67 meters (200 feet) above the water. Well informed guides share the bridge's colorful secrets, amazing architectural features and the myth and legend surrounding this New Zealand landmark.

And way above it all, stretching into the distance, the 360 degree views from the bridge's summit are a spectacular reward. Magnificent picture postcard views of a bustling harbor, island landscapes and vibrant city skyline make Auckland Bridge Climb truly 'the ultimate high'!

Experience amazing 360 degree views from the summit of the bridge and check out the world's first Harbour Bridge Bungy on your way back down.

Lion New Zealand - Maxi Yacht Auckland to Bay of Islands

The ultimate coastal maxi adventure! Explore 120 nautical miles of stunningly beautiful and rugged coastline, view abundant marine life and sail New Zealand's most famous racing maxi. Sailing from Auckland to the Bay of Islands.

Become the crew of the late Sir Peter Blake's 1985 Whitbread Round the World challenger, the legendary 'Lion New Zealand'. An unforgettable two night adventure from Auckland to the Bay of Islands.

Leaving the busy Auckland harbour, 'Lion' will sail past Rangitoto, a dormant volcano, across the 2003 America's Cup race course, through the Tiri passage and on to Kawau Island. Overnight in gorgeous Bon Accord Harbour, the barbecue is fired up and there is ample opportunity to head ashore and learn about some of New Zealand's richest history.

Next morning, sail past Maori Rock, Takatu Peninsula, Cape Rodney, Sail Rock, Hen and Chickens and, weather permitting, stop at the spectacular Poor Knights Islands. Take the opportunity to snorkel in this marine reserve recognized as one of the top ten dive sites in the world. For the second night's anchorage, one of the sheltered harbors at either Tutukaka, Whangaruru, Whangamumu or the Bay of Islands is chosen.

On the final day, sail around Cape Brett and The Hole in the Rock (just as Captain James Cook did in 1764) then through the numerous islands the Bay is so famous for. This adventure is more diverse and dynamic than any other in New Zealand, steeped in vast and colorful history, a once in a lifetime opportunity. Every sailing is different as weather will influence the anchorages and route chosen by the skipper.

In Sir Peter's words, “Lion was overbuilt to withstand the rigours of the Southern Ocean bordering Antarctica”

No sailing experience is necessary, however this trip is only suitable for people with an adventurous attitude and those willing to participate as part of a team.
