Fountain shows at Caesars

No civilization put on a greater spectacle than ancient Rome , and now you have a chance to witness the glory for yourself at Caesars Palace 's fountain shows.

Just when you thought you had seen it all, the Fall of Atlantis fountain show will captivate you with its stunning special effects. Located in the Forum Shops, next to The Cheesecake Factory, the free fountain show uses lifelike animatronic figures to recount the myth of Atlantis.

The story unfolds as King Atlas tries to determine which of his children will rule Atlantis. The siblings try to destroy each another, poisoning the kingdom with their greed. Finally, the gods decide to step in and settle the dispute, launching the Fall of Atlantis. A 20-foot winged beast appears from behind Atlas' throne and watches over the destruction as Atlantis is consumed by fire and then flooding water.

Surrounding monitors add to the drama of the show with a variety of visual displays. Be sure to get to the show a few minutes early to grab a good spot; the area gets crowded quickly.

Once the show concludes, take a walk behind the fountain and check out more than 100 species of ocean life in a 50,000-gallon saltwater aquarium.

Those involved in product testing for slot machines are asked to play the machines for a brief period of time. After playing, a series of questions is asked about different features of the slot machines, such as payout frequency and appearance.

At the end of the experience, participants may even be invited to take part in a focus group, in which they are asked to explain their answers in more detail. Las Vegas Preview Studios offers you the unique opportunity to put in your 2 cents and truly make a difference.

Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History ReviewTucked away on the campus of the University of Nevada , Las Vegas , the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History is an educational treasure waiting to be discovered.

Tracing the main wall of the museum's foyer is a collection of some of the region's oldest inhabitants, live reptiles. A variety of eye-catching desert creatures are encased in display tanks, from the Western Whiptail, Nevada 's most common lizard, to the venomous Gila Monster. At the center of the exhibit is an open-air habitat for desert tortoises.

A large portion of the museum puts focus on the lives and traditions of the Paiute and Hopi Indians. Positioned alongside prints of old photographs are a number of stone tools crafted by Southern Paiutes. Among them are choppers, hammers, scrapers and knife blades.

Also on display are a variety of baskets, including burden baskets, bowling baskets, seed beaters, storage baskets and mush bowls, which all played a key role in the Paiutes' day-to-day survival. Winter moccasins, made of badger skin and sewn with sinew, often worn by children in colder months, rest near a display of needles once used to stitch soft hides.

An exhibit dedicated to artistry features several Hopi katsina dolls, figurines carved out of cottonwood root by Hopi men, meant to portray numerous spirits. Carrying prayers of health, fertility and rain from the Hopi to the gods, katsinas are both male and female and represent plants, animals, human attributes, the sun and death. Some of the katsinas represented at the museum are Mastop (Fertility), Kwivi (Warrior God) and Honan (Badger).

In another section of the museum, a 72-piece artifact exhibit chronicles the history of ancient Mesoamerica . Among the pieces on display are ceramic baby figurines, a jade mask, basalt statues and an obsidian labret (lip piercing). The artifacts in the exhibit date from 1500 B.C. to A.D. 1519, and multiple societies are represented, including the Olmec, Veracruz , Maya, Aztec and others.

Nearby, visitors can learn about different forms of dress and view examples of the huipil (woman's blouse), men's traje (menswear) and various hair wraps. Another display of note contains more than 50 elaborate Mexican dance masks. The collection includes "Negritos," exquisite black masks decorated with bold red lips and white eyes.

The museum also offers several interactive exhibits, the largest being a traditional upright Navajo loom. Supported by wooden poles, the loom has no mechanical parts. Following the instructions posted nearby, visitors can try their hand at the difficult task of weaving.

Surrounded by a lush desert demonstration garden, the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History offers both a unique and exciting glimpse into the natural history of Southern Nevada and is well worth the trip.

Masquerade Village Review

It's Carnivale every day at the Rio , with the hotel-casino's lavish Masquerade Show in the Sky.

The sexy new show, redesigned by Dick Foster Productions, takes visitors on a journey through the world's greatest celebrations with energetic dancers, exotic costumes and plenty of fun, fun, fun.

But it's much more than a sky show that takes place in the Masquerade Village -- which, patterned after a northern Italian village, features shops, restaurants and a wine cellar -- the party begins with a parade led by Rio Rita, with acrobats, mimes and the like -- a true party in which patrons mingle with performers.

The show's floats (the main two of which weigh 20,000 pounds apiece) remain intact; however, its choreography and length have been given an overhaul -- once merely 12 minutes long, the show's length has more than doubled. Dancers perform to "Swing and Disco," "Venice Internationale," "Contemporary Street Show" and "Beach Party."

And what better way to take part in the spectacle than becoming part of it? For a mere $9.95, patrons can get into costume and ride the floats. After meeting at the Masquerade Village 's main stage, riders are funneled backstage and given beads and hats (including a souvenir medallion) before taking their spot on the floats.

The enthusiasm is contagious as you ride above the Masquerade Village , maracas in hand, interacting with the dancers. Be advised, however, that it's not your job to throw out the beads!

One of Vegas' best free attractions, the Masquerade Show in the Sky is better than ever. Be sure to get there early to maximize your party potential.

Carrying on that party theme is a cast of 94 "bevertainers" (76 female, 18 male) who, in addition to serving your cocktail with a smile, periodically break out into song and dance numbers at 10 mini-stages throughout the casino, from the Carnival World buffet to the Village Seafood buffet. The Rio has again tapped Dick Foster Productions, which put together the Masquerade Village shows, for the choreographed numbers.

M&M's World

M&M's World may be the most delicious attraction in Vegas. And judging by its scores of visitors, M&M's World must be doing something right

Hours of operation: Sunday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. - midnight.

Cost: Free.

Payment options: Cash, Visa, MasterCard.

Reservations: Not applicable.

Location: Near the corner of the Strip and Tropicana Avenue . Next door to the MGM Grand hotel-casino.

Age/Height/Weight restrictions: No restrictions.

M&M's World uses ingenuity and a whole lot of sugar to make an impression on Vegas.

Four floors of retail space devoted to our favorite chocolate-covered candies? It just doesn't get much better than that! Located in the Showcase Mall, the mouth-watering exhibit features Red, Yellow and the rest of the brightly colored gang on everything from T-shirts and golf-club covers to calculators and martini glasses.

The first floor of the 26,000-square-foot attraction looks like an average gift shop, but as you reach the back and see the escalators climbing toward multiple levels, you realize there is much more than meets the eye. Each floor gets more exciting as you make your way to the top, and just when you think you've seen it all, the folks at M&M World outdo themselves once again.

The attraction features a 3-D movie theater, the films rotate and viewers are rewarded with a surprise treat as they exit. There also is a wall of M&M's, displaying the sweet treat in nearly every color imaginable, from aqua green to gold. But perhaps the most exciting exhibit in the attraction is the M&M Racing Team area. The exhibit is centered on a replica of #38, the M&M's sponsored race car currently driven by Elliott Sadler in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.

The face of Vegas has changed over the years as many old, historic hotels have been imploded to make way for the new mega-resorts of today. All that remains of many of those old properties is the neon signs that once adorned them.

The Neon Museum , currently an outdoor walking tour, is located downtown at the Fremont Street Experience. It was created by the city of Las Vegas to preserve that piece of Vegas history.

Not only are the signs historical, with their spectacular colors, intricate animation and sheer size, they are also considered by many to be true works of art.

Whether you go the museum to rekindle your memories of the Vegas that was or you are seeing the signs for the first time, it's an interesting and enjoyable attraction.

The Neon Museum officially opened in 1996 with the installation of the Hacienda Horse and Rider sign at the intersection of the Fremont Street Experience and Las Vegas Boulevard . The sign was originally created in 1967 for the Hacienda Hotel, which was imploded in 1996 to make way for the Mandalay Bay resort.

Since its opening, the museum has installed several more signs along the Fremont Street Experience including, "Andy Anderson," the Anderson Dairy mascot, which was originally installed in 1956 at the dairy that once operated on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Aladdin's genie lamp, installed in 1966 at the old Aladdin Hotel, became part of the museum in 1997.

The Flame Restaurant sign was originally installed in 1961 on the roof of the restaurant once located on Desert Inn Road . It was donated to the sign museum in 1997.

The Chief Hotel Court sign, one of the older signs in the museum's collection, is from 1940 and was located at a hotel on East Fremont Street . It was refurbished and given to the museum.

In addition to the signs installed along the Fremont Street Experience, the museum has also created a neon sign "boneyard." Non-restored historic signs exist on a 3-acre site near Downtown Las Vegas. The core collection of signs are from the Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO). There are also signs by individuals, businesses and other sign companies that were chosen for the collection by the Neon Museum Board of Directors.

Tours of the boneyard for groups of 10 or more are available by special appointment. Call (702) 387-NEON or go to http://www.neonmuseum.org/ to arrange for a tour. Currently, 30 signs from the boneyard are on display at the Nevada State Museum .

For more neon art, you can also check out Neonopolis, a shopping and entertainment center located on Fremont Street . Neonopolis has several memorable neon signs on display from around the country. The signs, from the '40s, '50s and '60s, have been restored to their original splendor.

The Sirens of TI have arrived, and now no man is safe in Sirens' Cove.

Part muse, part temptress, part pirate, the Sirens of TI battle a band of pirates in Sirens' Cove, located at the front entrance of the popular hotel and casino. The 12-minute show offers music, energy, dance, temptation, danger, excitement, sensuality and seduction on a "stage" the size of four football fields filled with water.

After luring a band of pirates into Sirens' Cove with their hypnotic voices, the Sirens quickly find themselves at odds with the pirates they had hoped to befriend. Familiar with the legend of sirens, the captain and crew of The Bull are suspicious of both the Sirens and their motives and launch an attack on the seductive temptresses. Not ones to give up without a fight, the Sirens reveal their dark side as they unleash their fury on the band of renegades, ultimately sinking the pirates' ship.

Narrowly escaping the doomed Bull, the pirates board the Sirens' ship, The Song, and face off with the alluring beauties once and for all. Weakened from battle, the pirates at last succumb to the Sirens, and the real fun and entertainment begin.

In what can be described only as a modern musical-meets-action-movie, the show is packed with countless thrills, including swordplay, pyrotechnics and high-diving acrobatics. Created, produced and directed by Kenny Ortega, the Sirens of TI also features songs and dances choreographed to original scores by Emilio Estefan.

Sirens of TI, the centerpiece of the hotel and casino's ongoing evolution, gives visitors a clear indication of the mature direction that TI is heading.

The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian adds a little "Streetmosphere" to the shopping experience, providing fun and entertainment for all that visit.

Numerous street perfomers of all shapes and sizes -- from Italian opera singers to costumed actors -- can be found entertaining guests as they wander the cobblestone walkways that twist and turn through the Grand Canal Shoppes.

Artiste del Arte brings the spirit of old Venice back to life at the Grand Canal Shoppes with performances held at several locations within the shopping mecca. Made up of classically trained singers, actors and entertainers from across the globe, the group of performers put on a variety of exciting and unique shows throughout the day. In the evenings, guests can indulge in the musical delights of The Venetian Trio at St. Mark's Square.

Numerous "Living Statues" can also be found throughout the Grand Canal Shoppes, specifically in St. Mark's Square and in front of Ann Taylor. Often mistaken for actual statues, they can be found entertaining and amazing guests daily.

Another sight to be seen is The Gondolier March. At the beginning and end of each day, a parade of gondoliers march through the mall while serenading onlookers. Beginning at the food court, the gondoliers make their way through the mall, concluding in St. Mark's Square.

In addition to the painted ceiling overhead and the replicas of famous Italian landmarks throughout, the singers and entertainers at the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian make this the shopping experience of a lifetime.

The eight-minute show begins with the plaintive howl of an animatronic wolf, which suddenly appears at the top of the mountain. The wolf is joined by other wildlife, including a bear and an eagle.

The fountains come alive, shooting up to eight stories high and dancing along to a symphonic score recorded especially for Sam's Town by the Indianapolis Philharmonic Orchestra. The show chronicles the Western pioneer experience.

Sunset Stampede is located in Mystic Falls Park , a 25,000-square-foot live forest within an atrium. There is plenty of room for viewing the show, although those standing up front are likely to get a bit wet. A bar situated in the middle of the park provides a good vantage point while offering onlookers the chance to stay dry.

Once the show concludes, Mystic Falls becomes peaceful once more. Filled with lush foliage, cascading waterfalls and a babbling brook, the spot is the ideal location for relaxation. Wooden benches are scattered throughout the park, providing a place to sit and take in the view. And for those interested in a leisurely stroll, stone walkways lined with rustic hanging lanterns weave their way through the park.

The Fremont Street Experience

One of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places to visit in Las Vegas is the Fremont Street Experience. With a free lightshow that operates daily, this is among one of the most popular Las Vegas attractions on the entire strip. Located in the very heart of Las Vegas , Fremont Street has ten legendary casinos near the Viva Vision screen where the show takes place. There are also many restaurants and other attractions in the same area, as well.

There are many different parts to the Fremont Street Experience, which make the entire street among the most legendary of Las Vegas attractions.

The Lightshow - The true Fremont Street Experience

The lightshow takes place on the Viva Vision screen, which is one of the largest screens in the world. With 12 million lights, and hundreds of thousands of wattage blasted into the sound system, the show is a breath taking, heart pounding affair that you will remember for years to come. As it is free, it is one of the most entertaining things to see while in Las Vegas . Of all of the Vegas attractions, the Fremont Street Experience can be a bit uncomfortable. As you have to look up and strain through large crowds, each show lasts roughly ten minutes, which allows you to take a break before getting to look up 90 feet above your head to see the display.

 * The Casinos

There are ten different Casinos on Fremont street , all of them as famous as its neighbor. On account of this, you may spend days visiting them all. If you are interested in seeing the Elvis shows, or merely gambling and drinking to your hearts content, you will want to see these Casinos during your stay.

* The Hotels

Attached to all of the Casinos are accompanying hotels. If you are interested in staying in some of the most luxurious and famous hotels in Las Vegas , you will want to get reservations at one of these ten hotels. This will give you easy access to some of the best sights and sounds in Las Vegas without having to travel a long way to get there.

* The Restaurants

All along Fremont street , there more than 60 restaurants that you can visit. These range from extravagant affairs that require reservations, to 'fast food' style joints that let you get a quick bite to eat so you can go back to gambling at one of the ten casinos or let you go back to experience more of the Fremont Street experience. This wide variety allows you to pick and choose exactly what you want without having to leave Fremont Street in order to do it.

With so much to see and do, living through the Fremont Street experience is a requirement for anyone visiting Las Vegas for fun or even for business.
