Gulch Trail

Slow down and enjoy the serenity of Lanai on a peaceful hike through scenic Maunalei Gulch or along the breathtaking Lanai Coastline.

Choose from the following tour options:

Maunalei Gulch Trail: The Island's ridges are forested with Cook Island Pines, Koa Trees, Iron Woods and Kukui Nut Trees. These beautiful ridges drape across the Munro Trail into the Maunalei Gulch, which offers a whole new world to explore for all levels of hikers. Canopied with Kiawe Trees, the Gulch Trail serpentines across a dry creek bed where the sweet fragrance of ginger flowers surround you and guava, wild berries and tiny tomato vines entangle in the lava rock at your feet. Along the way, talk story with your Adventure Lanai guide and learn about the history of Lanai and the indigenous plants and animals, which inhabit the island.

Coastal Trail: With your knowledgeable Adventure Lanai guide, you'll journey along sandy stretches of beaches for close encounters with Green Sea Turtles, shallow reefs and shell hunting. You may have the opportunity to encounter a Green Sea Turtle or Monk Seal sunbathing as the cool trade wind breezes blow. Along the way, talk story with your guide and learn about the history of Lanai and the indigenous plants and animals, which inhabit the island.

Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle

Kayak/Snorkeling Adventure

Kayak the pristine coast of Lanai, and snorkel with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, dolphins, and brilliant colorful reef fish.

This eco-friendly excursion will be led by an informative Adventure Lanai guide in an unobtrusive manner, leaving the delicate eco-system untouched. Kayak and snorkel locations vary depending on conditions, however visitors often have an opportunity to paddle right by the WWII Liberty shipwreck, which ran aground on the reef about 50 years ago. Great fun for the entire family!

Lanai Beach

Beach Surf Adventure

Whether you're a novice or a "Big Kahuna" the friendly instructors will show you a memorable, fun-filled morning of surfing in the warm Hawaiian waters!

You'll journey to a secluded and uncrowded Lanai beach with a knowledgeable guide and surfer. Here, you'll have a dry land practice and learn a variety of techniques including surf etiquette, current reading, channels, cuts, positioning, surf sets and drop in skills. After your dry land lesson you'll be ready to tackle Lanai waves with your instructor.

Choose the Long Board option for a classic lesson on a lightweight wooden long board, or the Surf Kayak option to surf on a "sit on top" or skirted kayak.

Koloiki Ridge Nature Hike

Enjoy the solitude of Lana'i as you begin your hike through the forested hills and valleys of the Koele uplands. The forest canopy, with its filtered sunlight, finally gives way to open vistas and steep ravines once carved by flowing streams. Before you, two valleys drop sheer to both sides of the center ridge as the islands of Molokai and Maui thrust skyward across the northern horizon. 

Guided hikes are available:

Daily:  11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

  • Fee:  $15 per person

5 mile hike

Private hikes available.

Snacks and drinks included. Lunches can be ordered (knapsack packed).

Lanai Activities

Stables at Koele

Equestrians will find Lana'i provides a thrilling setting for active and leisurely trail riding. Our Koele, Paniolo and Mahana Trail Rides are walking rides and are Western tack only. The Private Trail Ride (English, as well as Western tack) allows the more experienced rider to go at a faster pace if desired. Group rides can be customized to your requirements upon advance notification. Shuttle service is provided between the hotels and the stables for a fee.

Koele Trail Ride

This leisurely walking ride follows a wooded trail winding behind the Lodge, giving riders the opportunity to get a close look at the foliage that surrounds Koele. The top of the trail offers sweeping views of Maui, Molokai, Lana'i City and The Lodge. This ride is recommended to those who feel comfortable on a horse, yet are still at the beginner level.

  • 1-1/2 Hours, $65 per person.

 

Paniolo Trail Ride

Two hour escape into the hills surrounding Koele, once the center of ranching operations on the island between 1874 and 1951. The trail leads the rider up through guava groves and patches of ironwood trees, offering glimpses of axis deer, quail, wild turkeys, and Santa Gertrudis cattle, culminating in spectacular views of the dryland forest of Kanepuu and Lana'i City. Although the ride progresses at a very leisurely pace, some previous riding experience is recommended.

  • 2 Hours, $75 per person.

 

Mahana Trail Ride

Explore the windswept plains of the old Lana'i Ranch on this newly added trail ride. You’ll experience scenic views of Maui and Molokai, with glimpses of Maunalei Gulch and the Lana'i Hale. Keep your cameras ready, as the local wildlife can sometimes pose for pictures.

  • 2-1/2 Hours, $95 per person.

 

Mahana Meal Ride

Along with exploring the picturesque Mahana trails, depending on the time of day, you’ll take along with you cuisine carefully prepared by our award-winning resort. What a wonderful treat as you stop to leisurely enjoy the surrounding sights of the beautiful Mahana trail.

Sunset Ride

Enjoy a spectacular Hawaiian sunset on horseback. Check at the Concierge’s desk for availability and departure times.

 Eco-Marine Mammal Tour

From December thru April, Humpback Whales can be seen breaching, tail slapping and even nursing their calves in the lee of Lana'i coast. The north shore of Lana'i offers one of the longest barrier reefs in the state of Hawaii. Imagine snorkeling with sea turtles or exploring ancient ship-wrecks. With the largest Green Sea Turtle rookery in Hawai'i it is not uncommon to encounter dozens of turtles in just a few miles.
